what if life is now

I spent so long afraid to lose.
I almost forgot to live.
I held on to the ones who left
And gave all I could give.
I kept my life for someday,
As if I had endless time.
While morning came through my window,
I kept waiting for a sign.
What if life is not tomorrow?
What if life is now?
Not when everything gets better.
Not when I figure out how.
What if happiness is not
Someone promising to stay?
Maybe it is simply waking up
And choosing life today.
